Preston Bend Cemetery Association Meeting 2019

The Preston Bend Cemetery Association held its 63rd meeting at Preston Bend Cemetery on Sunday, Fathers’ Day, June 16th.  There were 44 people in attendance.

The meeting was called to order at 11:22 by President, Jessica Adams. Jessica stated that the weather was much cooler than usual due to the rains and thanked those in attendance for coming to honor those buried, despite the stormy weather. The meeting was opened with a word of prayer by Fred Hudson.

President, Jessica Adams stated this was the 63rd annual meeting of the association. She brought up that there are many of our family members who were born and lived in the old Preston Bend community, which is now under Lake Texoma including: Benton Helm, Betty Ruth Jones, Ollie Helm Mayfield, David Mollenhour and Dorthy Mollenhour. Of those in attendance at the meeting there were 5 families represented. Those families are: Helm Family, Mollenhour Family, Mullins Family, Terrell Family and Jones Family.

Last years’ minutes were read by the secretary, Morgan Helm, and the financial report was given by the treasurer, Marvelle Hudson.  Both were approved as read.

Marvelle reiterated that all donations are important for the upkeep and special projects that keep the cemetery maintained. Large donations came in from the Holland family and the Scoggins Funeral Home in the recent months that will be used for future projects such as, making repairs on old headstones that have been broken due to their age. Marvelle answered a question from the Terrell family about possibly getting their families to repair the broken headstones, Marvelle’s response was that due to the age of the headstones many of the families have passed as well.

A special thanks went to the Hudson's for the great work they have done to keep the cemetery mowed, removing weeds and limbs and cleaning around graves that have been neglected for many years. They also dedicated much of their time to traveling out to the cemetery to discuss plots with families. Those in attendance were grateful for their willingness to do this.

There was discussion of making sure families know that there should not be any trees or large shrubs planted inside the cemetery.

Marvelle Hudson displayed obituaries and read the names of those who were associated and/or buried in the cemetery since last year’s meeting. This year’s deaths: Phillip Robinson, Estelle Scally, Millred Fullencheck, Linda Cathrine Stringfellow, Janie Hull, Mr. Cunningham, Donna Lee Hall, Robert Smith, Randy Conine, and Willie Maud Helm.

Door Prize Winners: Abbey Watson, Gary Harris, Zoie Mollenhour, Jasper Helm, Benton Helm, Cecil Jones, Josh Mollenhour, Gaitlin Helm, Halle Helm, Samantha Mollenhour, Steve Lindsey

 Old Business:

-We are still looking for anyone interested in a service project. The Terrell family suggested an eagle scout project.

-There was an open invitation from Terrie Townsend and Lakeway United Methodist Church to meet at their church instead of the cemetery. A vote was taken, and the majority agreed to keep it at the Preston Bend Cemetery. It was decided to continue to gather at 10AM and begin the meeting when most have arrived.

There was no new business to discuss.

Special Recognition/Gift Certificates:

Oldest Man- Benton Helm(85);  Oldest Woman- Betty Ruth Jones (95); Youngest Child- Fletcher Helm (21 months); Most Children present- Dustin and Andrea Helm (4); and Farthest Traveled- Michael Wright from Illinois.

The meeting was then adjourned.

A blessing for our lunch was led by Vice President, Steve Lindsey. An offering was collected followed by lunch and fellowship.
